  • Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center 101 Arbuckle Court Weaverville, CA, 96093 United States (map)

—Free Admission—

The Fire and Music Project tour: a series of six concerts across North State California. The concert experience will feature live music, poetry, and videography accompanying stories of fire ecology, indigenous land management practices, and history of California's relationship with fire suppression and prescribed fire. The program features a group of artists who have begun their transformation into fire practitioners. Their stories and performances will create an immersive experience that invites audiences to examine their own relationship with fire.

Artists

Ariana Kim, violin ⟡ Ellen McGehee, violin

Christina Simpson, viola ⟡ James Jaffe, cello

Ian Scarfe, piano + harmonium ⟡ Julie Zhu, composer

Program

Every performance will be unique with music to be chosen from: Ludwig van Beethoven, Hildegard von Bingen, Danny Clay, Antonín Dvořák, Missy Mazzoli, Franz Schubert, and Julie Zhu. Zhu's work Solastalgia, a place-based piece written for the project, centers listening and stewardship in the music as inspired by the group’s work with indigenous fire practitioners. Poet Silvi Alcivar brings focus and connection to the experience, sharing work written on-the-spot at prescribed burns and interacting with the audience. Live projections of video and imagery will show the artists returning prescribed fire to Northern California's landscapes, creating an immersive atmosphere.

This activity is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, through the Upstate California Creative Corps program.
