Questions and Answers

  • These programs are ready to meet you wherever you are in your musical journey. No prior experience is necessary, yet enthusiasts are likely to discover something new and intriguing. And during the breaks between pieces, you’ll have the chance to ask the musicians about anything making you curious.

  • You'll notice we often include at least one longer 20-30 minute piece on our programs. This gives us the opportunity to take a deep dive. Much as contemporary musicians sing the praises of the full-length album, great composers often envisioned a cohesive narrative when composing multi-movement works. That said, we have a great time with vignettes too, so be sure to try the 'Taste' quartet option or curate your own selection from the full repertoire list.

There are no set rules for time period and geography of the pieces. We enjoy works that have withstood the test of time, and we often counterbalance those with fresh voices from our own time.

  • Sure, go ahead! Feel free to browse the comprehensive repertoire list and reach out via the Contact page.

  • Great news, you’ll be hearing brilliant professional artists, with whom James has cultivated relationships over his 20+ years in the world of chamber music. Frequent collaborators include full-time chamber musicians and principal chairs in the San Francisco Opera and Ballet. Look forward to getting to know them as people too—this performance format lends itself to lively exchanges with the players.

  • As many or few as you like! You could go for a deep personal experience with just one or two listeners. For groups as large as 200 or more, we simply recommend selecting a venue with good acoustics. Keep in mind that chamber music came from living rooms, so the best arrangements allow people to sit close enough to get a good view.

  • We notice that great performances skillfully balance two truths:

    1. Music is a gift and everyone deserves to enjoy it.

    2. Musicians should be well-supported for dedicating their lives to their art.

Suggested payments are meant to help find this balance, and prices are not firm because the balance looks different at every concert. Thanks in advance for considering what type of payment feels right for you!

  • Go for the convenience of your own home, or orchestrate a performance at your dream venue. Suggested payments and scheduling apply to the greater San Francisco Bay Area. For national and international performances, we can incorporate them into existing tours or discuss a travel arrangement. Feel free to reach out via the Contact form.
